Working Principle of Wheelchair Restraint System for a Transportation Vehicle

Wheelchair access to fixed area: The wheelchair user enters the vehicle via a ramp or lift and pushes the wheelchair to a dedicated stationary area (usually marked or guided with lights).

 

Fixation strap attachment: For manual immobilization (commonly found in buses), the driver or passenger hooks the 4 immobilization straps (front, back, left and right) to a solid part of the wheelchair (e.g. the frame or a dedicated immobilization ring). Tighten the straps to ensure that the wheelchair cannot move.

 

Seat belt securing: After the wheelchair has been secured, the user is required to fasten the vehicle seat belt. Some systems by Xinder provide an additional shoulder belt or lumbar support for added stability.

 

Dynamic stabilization while driving: Fixed wheelchair straps for bus and locking mechanisms need to withstand the inertial force of the vehicle during acceleration, deceleration and turning to prevent the wheelchair from sliding or tipping.

 

Unlocking process: After arriving at the station, the driver or passenger manually loosens the fixing strap or presses the release button (automatic system). The wheelchair is unlocked and free to move off the vehicle.
